Building Resilience After Disaster

By Ehab Elsawaf | Senior Major Gifts Officer, ActionAid USA

Thank you for your support of this project, I'm writing to share some updates on our work in Nepal.

Heavy rainfall in September 2024 resulted in severe flooding and landslides across Nepal, directly affecting over 80,000 people including about 27,613 children. Many others have been indirectly impacted due to the destruction of health, water, sanitation, and education facilities. This rainfall, among the heaviest Nepal has experienced in decades, has tragically claimed nearly 250 lives, including 55 children (20 girls and 35 boys). The disaster has destroyed or damaged over 10,000 houses, 62 health facilities, 240 schools, 550 water supply systems, and 9,000 sanitation facilities. Landslides and debris have blocked major roads leading into the Kathmandu Valley, disrupting access to essential goods and critical services, including healthcare. As a result, there has been a noticeable rise in the price of food and other necessities.

ActionAid is currently supporting the construction of temporary shelters by providing clean sheets, which will ultimately house 150 households and is assisting the local water user committees in rebuilding their damaged drinking water systems in a process that is community-led and driven by water user groups as part of an effort to strengthen and empower local organizations. By localizing response actions through facilitation support from local implementing partners, 1,000 households are expected to benefit.

People reached by item distribtuion and location:

  • In Bansighat, 350 families have received food supplies, while 420 families have been provided with mattresses and bedsheets. Additionally, 60 dignity kits have been distributed to women and girls.
  • In Sinamangal, 120 families have been supported with food supplies, and 60 families have received tarpaulins.
  • In Godavari, 29 families have received food supplies, and 26 families have received mattresses and bedsheets.
  • In Konjyosom, financial support has been extended to 107 families, each receiving Rs 20,000, while 143 families have been supported with Rs15,000.

Thank you for your support during this critical time!
