Learning through Play

By Rirhandzu Mnisi | Project Administrator

In this second quarter of the year we are trying to eliminate underskilled and under equipped caregivers and teachers that many creches have in the impoverished areas of our country by offering workshops that will help them better understand their roles when it comes to early childhood development and we are also highlighting that children can learn while playing.

Last year August we were fortunate enough to have a volunteer (Renee Bonne) that many children in our creche referred to as "Teacher R" who is so passionate about early childhood development and children in general.Teacher R worked around building and creating a Toolkit that is made from recycled materials in order to help children develop a set of skills while playing and this toolkit will help to develop the children’s Cognitive movement, Emotions, and develop their Motor skills through playing.

Our Rise creche principal Bridget Matosse and our community outreach manager Benneth Mathebula conducted a workshop for six different creches around acornhoek and this workshop was focusing on the importance of learning through play and how playing can develop children’s different skills; and each of these creches were gifted a box of a play toolkit to use in their own creches. And we are looking forward into seeing the improvements from the children whose creches have received these play toolkits and also we will be working towards teaching other creches  how to creat their own play toolkits using recycled materials and homemade toys.
