Challenge

The Dandora slum is one of the poorest in Nairobi. The majority of people here are self-employed, living in houses that are not only congested but also lack space & proper hygiene & sanitation. Here, water for basic needs is in short supply. The continued infections are causing fears the disease could spread fast in the slums if not checked. The extreme poverty here could make it become the epicenter of COVID-19, affecting families & put strains to poorly equipped healthcare facilities in slum

Solution

To make sure that Dandora slums do not become an epicenter of coronavirus, DADREG is going to supply much needy hygiene kits (masks, soaps, sanitizers, toiletry, sanitary towels), making water & sanitation accessible and providing relief food to families who have been affected by the coronavirus lockdown. The project will provide water, water tanks & install them in various points in the community for handwashing & create awareness through public education helping to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Long-Term Impact

The project will support women & youth affected by COVID-19 through the loss of income restart their businesses post-COVID-19, creating a long-lasting impact on families whose businesses went down & are likely to face economic hardships without this project support. Safety nets provided to families affected by the loss of income resulting from lockdowns will enable them to weather the periods of the lockdown to fight the COVID-19 infections. Watertanks will provide handwash to the residents
