Fighting Stunting and Malnutrition: A Report on PLANE's Efforts in Uganda
Introduction:
PLATFORM for the NEEDY (PLANE) has been actively involved in initiatives aimed at reducing stunting and malnutrition among children under 5 in Uganda, particularly in the Tooro region. This report covers the activities conducted by PLANE from May to July 2024 to raise awareness, engage stakeholders, and implement interventions to tackle this pressing issue.
Problem Statement:
According to the Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (2022), 29% of children under 5 in Uganda are stunted, with the Tooro region recording the highest rate at 40%. Additionally, 53% of children in Uganda are anaemic, highlighting the serious challenges of malnutrition in the country. These alarming statistics underscore the urgent need for intervention to address the root causes of stunting and malnutrition, such as inadequate dietary practices, lack of awareness, and limited access to nutritious food.
Solution:
PLANE has implemented a series of activities to address the issue of stunting and malnutrition in Uganda. These activities include:
- Recording drama episodes aired on Voice of Tooro to raise awareness about the consequences of stunting.
- Conducting 10 radio talk shows to educate parents and community leaders on their roles in combating malnutrition.
- Organizing 02 dialogues with district leaders of Kabarole district and Fort Portal tourism city to discuss collaborative efforts in sensitizing the community about malnutrition.
- Establishing 15 vegetable demonstration garden to promote home gardening and nutritious food practices.
- Moved to 05 secondary schools to sensitize the students about the alarming malnutrition and stunting levels in Uganda and what should be done to reverse the trend.
- Monitoring and evaluating the impact of interventions on families and communities.
Moving forward
PLANE aims to expand the establishment of demonstration gardens to more communities and schools, as well as enhance awareness campaigns on malnutrition with the support of donors and partners. These efforts will contribute towards reducing stunting levels and improving the overall health of children in Uganda.
Appreciation to Donors:
PLANE extends its heartfelt appreciation to donors, individual supporters, and partners for their invaluable contribution to the fight against stunting and malnutrition in Uganda. It is through your generosity and support that PLANE has been able to implement impactful interventions, engage stakeholders, and raise awareness about this critical issue. Your continued support is crucial in sustaining our efforts to reduce stunting levels and improve the well-being of children in Uganda.
In conclusion, PLANE remains committed to its mission of eradicating stunting and malnutrition in Uganda, and looks forward to ongoing collaboration with, GlobalGiving, donors and partners in this important cause. Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of children and families affected by malnutrition.
