Empowering Communities to Fight Malnutrition: A Step Towards a Healthier Uganda

PLATFORM for the NEEDY (PLANE) remains dedicated to mobilizing Ugandan communities to combat malnutrition, especially among children under five and expectant mothers. This quarter, we focused on practical interventions to improve nutrition and raise awareness across the region.

We successfully mobilized 45 women and young mothers to establish kitchen gardens, providing them with seedlings to grow vegetables. These gardens are designed to ensure families have access to fresh produce for daily consumption and income generation through sales. This initiative aims to promote sustainable nutrition practices and economic empowerment within communities.

Additionally, PLANE organized two radio talkshows in the Tooro region and nationally to discuss malnutrition’s effects, causes, and solutions. During one of these programs, the Fort Portal City Health Officer joined as a guest speaker. He urged community members to stop the habit of selling all their food crops, such as eggs, tomatoes, avocados, and oranges, without leaving enough for their families. He emphasized that Tooro is a rich food basket and encouraged parents to prioritize balanced diets for children and pregnant women.

We sincerely thank our supporters and donors for their continued generosity, which makes these impactful programs possible. We also appreciate GlobalGiving for providing us with a platform to fundraise and expand our outreach.

Looking ahead, PLANE remains committed to mobilizing communities, local leaders, health workers, and families to reduce stunting and malnutrition. We believe that empowering families with knowledge about balanced diets and sustainable food production is key to creating healthier communities.

In Uganda, 29% of children under five are stunted, with Tooro experiencing the highest rate at 40%. Your support is vital in helping us raise awareness and implement interventions to combat malnutrition and improve the health of our children.
