Kenya Reports First Ebola Death

By Development Alert | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

The Ebola response in East Africa has entered a concerning new phase following confirmation of Kenya’s first imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease, after which the patient sadly died on 5 October 2026. The patient was a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, travelled by road through Uganda to Kampala, and then flew to Nairobi, where the infection was confirmed. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic loss.

This development is a reminder that Ebola preparedness cannot stop at national borders. Health authorities in Kenya and Uganda are undertaking public-health response measures, including contact tracing, surveillance, case investigation, screening at high-risk points of entry, and community risk communication. WHO is supporting these efforts, including through laboratory supplies, protective equipment, and technical assistance.

At Development Alert, we recognize the importance of strengthening community-led prevention alongside government and health-sector response efforts. Our priorities include promoting reliable health information, encouraging early reporting of suspected illness, reinforcing hand hygiene, supporting vulnerable households, and helping communities understand the importance of cooperating with trained health teams.

The latest development also reinforces the need for practical preparedness in border communities, transport hubs, schools, markets, and other places where people interact daily. Communities need clear information—not panic, stigma, or misinformation.

Your support matters. Every contribution helps strengthen community awareness, preparedness, and the practical actions that can protect families during public-health emergencies. Together, we can help communities respond with knowledge, compassion, and responsibility.

Thank you for standing with Development Alert and the communities we serve during this critical time
