Dear Donor,
The launch of the Ervebo vaccination research effort in the DRC represents an important new development in the fight against Bundibugyo Ebola.
The global vaccine stockpile allocated 70,000 doses to the DRC: 50,000 for frontline and health workers and 20,000 for a Phase 3 clinical trial investigating whether Ervebo can provide protection against Bundibugyo virus.
This distinction is important because Ervebo is licensed for Zaire ebolavirus, while the current DRC outbreak is caused by Bundibugyo virus. WHO states that it is not yet known whether Ervebo protects humans against Bundibugyo virus.
Development Alert therefore continues promoting responsible health communication.
Communities should receive accurate information about what is known, what is being researched and why informed consent matters.
We do not replace medical professionals or clinical researchers. Instead, our role is to help communities understand the response and connect appropriately with health authorities.
Research during an active outbreak can generate evidence that may benefit not only current patients and frontline workers but also future communities facing Bundibugyo Ebola.
Your support helps us keep communities informed while science works to close critical gaps in protection.
