Dear Donor,
Surveillance remains one of the most important tools in controlling the current Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak.
The latest ECDC figures show that the DRC outbreak has affected 62 of 167 health zones across seven provinces, with particularly high numbers in Ituri and North Kivu.
The distribution of cases is changing, making continued surveillance essential.
Development Alert continues promoting community awareness around the importance of reporting unusual illness and cooperating with trained response teams.
Community members are often the first to notice when someone becomes seriously ill. When concerns are communicated quickly through appropriate channels, trained health authorities have a better opportunity to investigate and respond.
Our awareness work also emphasizes that surveillance is not about creating fear. It is about identifying potential transmission early enough to protect families and communities.
WHO and other response partners continue strengthening surveillance, laboratory testing, contact tracing and community engagement.
ECDC's decision to deploy additional epidemiologists to the DRC demonstrates the continuing importance of strengthening outbreak intelligence and response capacity.
Every community member who understands the importance of early reporting can become part of the early-warning system.
