Dear Donor,
The continuing Ebola emergency in the DRC is placing enormous pressure on communities, healthcare systems and families.
The latest official surveillance data report 7,475 confirmed cases and 3,605 deaths through 16 September, while subsequent reporting has indicated additional cases and deaths.
Development Alert continues focusing on the community dimension of the response.
We promote accurate health information, early reporting, hygiene, cooperation with health workers and stigma reduction.
Families affected by Ebola can experience fear, isolation, loss of income and social stigma in addition to the immediate health emergency.
Our awareness work therefore emphasizes dignity and compassion.
Communities should not blame or isolate people because they come from affected areas or have been identified as contacts.
Instead, people should be encouraged to cooperate with trained health teams and follow appropriate public-health guidance.
WHO continues emphasizing community engagement as fundamental to controlling the outbreak.
Supporting communities means protecting people from disease while also protecting their dignity, livelihoods and relationships.
