Dear Donor,
A major new development in the DRC Ebola response occurred on 19 September 2026, when authorities began vaccinating frontline healthcare and response workers in Bunia, the epicenter of the outbreak.
The campaign is using Ervebo under a special framework because the current outbreak is caused by Bundibugyo virus, rather than the Zaire ebolavirus for which Ervebo is licensed.
WHO has emphasized that the effectiveness of Ervebo against Bundibugyo virus remains uncertain and that its use against this strain is being undertaken within research protocols.
Development Alert continues emphasizing the protection of frontline workers through infection-prevention awareness, community cooperation and responsible health communication.
Health workers are essential to surveillance, diagnosis, treatment, contact tracing and community education.
Protecting them therefore protects the entire response system.
The new vaccination effort also highlights the urgent need for continued scientific research into Bundibugyo virus and appropriate medical countermeasures.
We remain grateful to supporters who help strengthen the community systems surrounding the formal Ebola response.
