Strengthen Protection for Frontline Health Workers

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Frontline healthcare workers are among the most important people in the Ebola response—and among those requiring strong protection.

The DRC has recorded 7,475 confirmed cases and 3,605 deaths, while hundreds of patients remain hospitalized in isolation.

Development Alert continues emphasizing infection prevention, community cooperation and respect for health-worker safety.

Our community awareness activities encourage people to communicate honestly with health workers, follow referral instructions and cooperate with established infection-prevention procedures.

We also emphasize that community volunteers should never attempt to manage suspected Ebola cases without appropriate training and protective measures.

A safe response depends on a clear division of responsibilities: communities report concerns and cooperate; trained health teams conduct assessment, testing, treatment and contact follow-up.

On 19 September, DRC began vaccinating frontline healthcare workers in Bunia using Ervebo under a research/compassionate-use framework. However, WHO notes that Ervebo's effectiveness against Bundibugyo virus remains unknown.

This development demonstrates both the urgency of protecting frontline workers and the importance of scientific research during this unusual outbreak.

Development Alert continues strengthening community understanding so that health workers can perform their duties with greater cooperation and trust.

Protecting the people responding to Ebola is an essential part of protecting the communities they serve.
