Strengthening Contact Identification and Follow-Up

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Contact identification and follow-up remain essential to interrupting Ebola transmission.

The latest ECDC update reports that 87.6% of identified contacts were under follow-up, while the DRC had recorded 7,475 confirmed cases and 3,605 deaths as of 16 September.

Development Alert continues promoting community understanding of contact tracing so that families can cooperate with trained response teams.

Contact tracing can sometimes create fear because families may misunderstand why health workers ask about movements, household members or recent interactions.

Our community engagement activities explain that being identified as a contact does not mean someone has Ebola. Monitoring is intended to detect possible illness early and protect the wider community.

We also emphasize confidentiality, dignity and respectful treatment.

Community leaders and volunteers can help explain these measures and encourage families to cooperate with trained health personnel.

Development Alert does not replace professional contact-tracing teams. Instead, we focus on the communication and community mobilization that allow formal response systems to work more effectively.

We also recognize the importance of rapid follow-up in remote areas where transportation and communication challenges can delay response.

WHO continues to identify surveillance and contact tracing among the critical response measures required to bring the outbreak under control.

Your support helps us strengthen the community trust that makes contact tracing possible.
