Dear Donor,
An Ebola response must protect dignity as well as health.
The DRC has now recorded 7,475 confirmed cases and 3,605 deaths, while 1,798 people have recovered according to WHO's latest data.
Development Alert continues promoting compassionate community attitudes toward survivors and affected families.
Stigma can have serious consequences. People may hide illness, avoid healthcare facilities or refuse to cooperate with contact-tracing teams because they fear discrimination.
Our community engagement activities encourage residents to understand that affected people need support rather than blame.
We also encourage communities to welcome survivors back into social and economic life.
Healthcare workers and volunteers should likewise be treated with respect rather than suspicion.
Reducing stigma is therefore an important part of strengthening outbreak response.
When people feel safe enough to report illness and seek help, communities become stronger partners in disease control.
