Dear Donor,
The continuing Ebola outbreak in the DRC makes cross-border preparedness essential.
WHO reports 7,475 confirmed DRC cases and 3,605 deaths as of 16 September, while ECDC reports that the outbreak is affecting 62 health zones across seven provinces.
Uganda successfully ended its 2026 Ebola outbreak after recording 20 cases and completing 42 days without a new confirmed case.
Development Alert continues supporting preparedness among communities whose livelihoods and family relationships connect Uganda and the DRC.
Our work emphasizes reliable communication, early reporting, hygiene promotion and awareness among border communities.
We engage local leaders, traders, transport workers, youth and community volunteers.
Cross-border preparedness is not about creating fear around movement. People depend on cross-border trade, family connections and travel.
Instead, the goal is to ensure that communities understand health risks and know how to respond responsibly.
WHO notes that informal crossing routes can facilitate virus exportation, importation and onward transmission, making stronger cross-border coordination and surveillance important.
Development Alert therefore continues supporting community-level preparedness while encouraging coordination with formal health authorities.
Strong border communities are informed communities—able to recognize risks without sacrificing livelihoods or social connections.
