Dear donor,
Uganda’s successful Ebola response has demonstrated the power of coordinated action, but the continuing crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo shows why regional solidarity remains essential.
Uganda has completed the 42-day enhanced monitoring period and remains Ebola-free following its 2026 outbreak. The country recorded 20 confirmed cases during the outbreak.
The DRC, meanwhile, has reached a critical stage. As of 3 September, authorities reported 6,342 confirmed cases and 3,072 deaths. The epidemic has spread across six provinces and continues to move rapidly. WHO has described it as the second-largest Ebola outbreak on record and the fastest-moving Ebola epidemic ever recorded.
Development Alert recognizes that protecting Uganda cannot be separated from supporting preparedness in communities connected to the DRC. Families, traders, transport workers and other community members maintain relationships across borders, making communication and vigilance essential.
Our activities therefore focus on community awareness, surveillance, hygiene promotion, rapid communication, support to local volunteers and preparedness at high-movement locations.
We continue engaging community leaders, teachers, youth, women, religious leaders and transport workers to strengthen community ownership of health preparedness.
The field motorcycle remains a practical tool for maintaining this work. It enables rapid travel to remote areas, supports follow-up activities and allows educational and prevention materials to reach communities where they are most needed.
Our message is one of preparedness rather than fear. Uganda’s achievement shows that Ebola can be contained. The DRC crisis shows why sustained investment is necessary.
Development Alert remains committed to protecting Uganda’s hard-won progress while standing in solidarity with communities affected by Ebola in the DRC. Continued donor support will help sustain grassroots preparedness, strengthen border resilience and ensure communities are never left without trusted information and support.
