Uganda's Ebola Success, Stronger Border

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear donor,

Uganda has officially reached an important public health milestone after successfully ending its 2026 Ebola outbreak. The country recorded 20 confirmed cases, including 18 recoveries and two deaths. Uganda completed 42 consecutive days without a new confirmed case after the last patient was discharged from care, providing strong evidence that the chains of transmission associated with the outbreak had been interrupted. WHO and Africa CDC have praised Uganda's response while emphasizing that preparedness must continue because Ebola remains active in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.

The situation in the DRC remains extremely serious. According to WHO's latest update, as of 26 August, the country had recorded 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths, with a crude case-fatality ratio of 48.1%. The outbreak has expanded to 60 health zones across six provinces, demonstrating how quickly the emergency continues to grow geographically.

Development Alert is continuing community-level preparedness activities along Uganda's border communities. Our interventions include health education, community surveillance, hygiene promotion, early reporting, engagement with Village Health Teams, and awareness activities in schools, markets, transport stages, places of worship and other community gathering points.

The field motorcycle purchased to strengthen emergency response remains a critical asset. It enables outreach teams to reach remote communities, conduct follow-up visits, support rapid alert investigation, transport educational materials and supplies, and maintain contact with local health structures.

Our work is also focused on preventing misinformation and stigma. Communities need trusted information and practical guidance, not fear. Local leaders, teachers, youth, women, transport workers and community volunteers are being encouraged to remain active partners in preparedness.

Uganda's achievement demonstrates the power of early action and community participation. The continuing crisis in the DRC reminds us that this progress must be protected. Continued donor support will allow Development Alert to maintain preparedness, strengthen border resilience and help vulnerable communities remain ready for future health emergencies.
