Dear supporter,
Uganda's successful declaration as Ebola-free is a significant achievement, but it also carries a responsibility to remain vigilant while the Democratic Republic of Congo continues fighting a much larger outbreak. Uganda recorded 20 confirmed cases during the 2026 outbreak and successfully stopped further transmission through intensive surveillance, contact tracing, isolation, treatment, and community engagement.
Across the border, the situation remains deeply concerning. The DRC has reported more than 3,000 confirmed Ebola infections, with response teams confronting difficult operational conditions, including insecurity, shortages, and challenges reaching some affected communities.
Development Alert continues to stand with communities affected by this regional health emergency. While our work in Uganda has shifted toward preparedness, our commitment to border communities remains strong. We continue promoting accurate health information, strengthening local community alert systems, and encouraging residents to report suspected illness promptly.
The experience of the Ugandan response has demonstrated the value of investing in community-level preparedness before an emergency becomes uncontrollable. Village Health Teams, community leaders, schools, transport operators, women's groups, youth organizations, and faith leaders all have important roles to play.
Our field response capacity, including the motorcycle supporting rapid movement of personnel and supplies, remains available for preparedness and emergency activities. This mobility is especially valuable in remote communities where poor roads can delay access.
Your generosity helped protect Uganda during a difficult period. Today, that same spirit of partnership is helping preserve Uganda's progress, strengthen border preparedness, and remind affected communities in the DRC that they are not alone.
