Building a Stronger Regional Future Beyond

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Uganda's successful containment of Ebola marks an important public health milestone, but it also marks the beginning of a new chapter focused on preparedness, resilience, and regional cooperation. The lessons learned throughout the response are now helping strengthen community health systems that will continue protecting families long after the outbreak has ended.

Across Uganda's western border, however, the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues responding to a major Ebola outbreak that has infected more than 3,200 people. The continued transmission highlights the importance of sustained investments in surveillance, community engagement, infection prevention, and rapid response throughout the region.

Development Alert is using this opportunity to strengthen long-term preparedness by supporting community health volunteers, maintaining disease surveillance networks, reinforcing public health education, and promoting strong partnerships between local leaders and health authorities. Communities that once responded to Ebola as an emergency are now integrating disease prevention into their everyday lives through improved hygiene, stronger reporting systems, and continued community awareness.

Cross-border collaboration remains central to these efforts. Local authorities, healthcare workers, and community organizations continue sharing knowledge and promoting consistent prevention messages that protect communities on both sides of the border.

We celebrate Uganda's achievement with gratitude while recognizing that our neighbors in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continue to need international solidarity and sustained support. Your generous partnership is helping ensure that the progress made in Uganda contributes to a safer, healthier, and more resilient region where communities are prepared not only to overcome Ebola but also future public health challenges together.
