Maintaining Vigilance Along the Uganda-DRC Border

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Although Uganda has successfully eliminated Ebola transmission and been officially declared Ebola-free, border communities understand that preparedness must continue. The ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where more than 3,200 people have been infected, reminds us that infectious diseases do not recognize national borders. Continued vigilance remains the strongest defense against future outbreaks.

Development Alert is maintaining strong partnerships with Village Health Teams, community leaders, schools, transport associations, and local health facilities throughout Uganda's border districts. Public awareness sessions continue encouraging regular handwashing, prompt reporting of suspected illnesses, and community participation in disease surveillance. Community volunteers are also monitoring high-risk locations, including markets, transport stages, and informal border crossing points where movement between neighboring countries remains frequent.

The relationships established during Uganda's Ebola response continue providing valuable protection even after the outbreak has ended. Community members are better informed, local response systems remain active, and communication between communities and health authorities is stronger than ever before. These achievements significantly improve Uganda's ability to detect and respond rapidly should future health threats arise.

Meanwhile, our thoughts remain with healthcare workers and affected families across the Democratic Republic of the Congo, whose dedication continues under extremely challenging circumstances.

Your generosity is ensuring that Uganda's success becomes a lasting investment in regional health security. Together, we remain committed to protecting border communities while supporting preparedness efforts that safeguard both Uganda and its neighbors for years to come.
