The DRC Continues the Fight Against Ebola

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Uganda's official declaration as Ebola-free is a testament to the power of strong leadership, coordinated public health action, and community participation. Through rapid surveillance, timely contact tracing, community awareness campaigns, and the tireless commitment of frontline health workers and volunteers, Uganda successfully interrupted Ebola transmission and protected millions of people from a much larger outbreak.

Despite this remarkable achievement, the regional threat has not disappeared. In neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Ebola outbreak continues to affect communities, with more than 3,200 people infected. Many affected communities continue facing enormous challenges, including weak health infrastructure, insecurity, population displacement, and limited access to healthcare services. These conditions make outbreak control considerably more difficult and require sustained humanitarian support.

Development Alert continues supporting preparedness efforts in Uganda's border districts by maintaining community surveillance networks, strengthening Village Health Teams, and conducting regular public awareness activities. Border communities remain vigilant because daily movement of traders, farmers, transporters, and families between Uganda and the DRC continues.

The experience gained during Uganda's successful response has strengthened local preparedness and created a lasting foundation for future disease prevention. Communities now understand the importance of early reporting, infection prevention, and working closely with health authorities whenever health threats emerge.

Your continued support has helped transform emergency response into lasting resilience. Together, we celebrate Uganda's achievement while standing with communities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that continue working courageously to overcome one of the region's most significant public health emergencies.
