Supporting Safe CrossBorder Trade During the Ebola

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear supporter,

Thank you so much for your continued support.

Cross-border trade provides food, income, and economic opportunity for thousands of families living between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. During the Ebola outbreak, protecting these livelihoods while reducing disease transmission has become one of Development Alert's most important priorities.

Thanks to your generous partnership, our teams continue working with traders, transport operators, market committees, and border authorities to promote practical infection prevention measures that support safer commerce. Public awareness sessions encourage regular handwashing, early recognition of Ebola symptoms, prompt reporting of illness, and responsible hygiene practices throughout busy trading areas.

Handwashing facilities continue serving traders and customers at major market entrances, while community volunteers provide ongoing demonstrations and distribute health education materials in local languages. Local leaders reinforce these messages during market meetings and encourage vendors to maintain clean trading environments.

These interventions are helping communities continue earning a living while protecting themselves, their customers, and neighboring communities. The cooperation between Ugandan and Congolese traders demonstrates the importance of regional solidarity during public health emergencies.

Your support is protecting both lives and livelihoods. Every trader reached with accurate health information contributes to a safer border economy and strengthens collective efforts to contain Ebola while preserving the economic resilience of border communities.
