Every minute matters during an Ebola outbreak. As Uganda continues responding to confirmed Ebola cases while strengthening surveillance along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, rapid movement of frontline teams has become essential. Thanks to the incredible generosity of GlobalGiving, Development Alert has acquired a field motorcycle that is transforming the speed and efficiency of our emergency response.
Many of the communities we serve are connected by rough, unpaved roads that become extremely difficult to navigate, especially during the rainy season. Previously, response teams often spent hours reaching villages where suspected cases or contacts had been reported. The new motorcycle has dramatically reduced travel time, allowing trained community health volunteers to reach households faster, conduct contact tracing more efficiently, and provide immediate health education before potential transmission expands.
The motorcycle is also strengthening daily surveillance activities across border communities where frequent movement between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo requires constant vigilance. Health teams can now visit multiple villages in a single day, follow up on reported alerts more quickly, and maintain closer communication with local leaders and Village Health Teams.
Beyond contact tracing, the motorcycle is supporting rapid community assessments, supervision of handwashing stations, and distribution of educational materials throughout remote communities.
Your support has provided far more than transportation—it has delivered speed, flexibility, and hope. Every kilometer traveled represents another opportunity to interrupt transmission, protect vulnerable families, and strengthen Uganda's frontline Ebola response where it is needed most.
