Uganda-DRC Strengthen Cross Border Surveillance

Impact Update – Uganda and DRC Strengthen Cross-Border Disease Surveillance to Protect Vulnerable Communities

Deardonor,

The fight against Ebola is a shared regional responsibility. As Uganda continues responding to 20 confirmed Ebola cases, collaboration with neighboring communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo remains essential to preventing further transmission. Thanks to your generous support, cross-border disease surveillance activities are helping both countries identify potential health risks early while strengthening preparedness in communities where daily movement across the border is common.

Community health volunteers, border health teams, and local leaders continue working together to promote timely reporting of suspected illnesses and encourage residents to seek medical attention immediately whenever symptoms appear. Surveillance activities have expanded beyond official border crossings to include informal community pathways frequently used by traders, farmers, and families. This community-based approach ensures that prevention efforts reach populations that traditional systems may overlook.

Joint awareness campaigns are delivering consistent public health messages in local languages, helping reduce confusion while encouraging communities on both sides of the border to adopt similar prevention practices. Health authorities continue exchanging surveillance information, allowing rapid follow-up whenever suspected cases require investigation.

Communities are increasingly recognizing that protecting one country also protects the other. This growing regional cooperation is strengthening trust, improving preparedness, and creating a united response that extends beyond national boundaries.

Your continued support is helping Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo build stronger surveillance systems that save lives today while creating lasting partnerships capable of responding to future infectious disease threats across the region.
