Strengthening WASH Committees to Sustain Ebola

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Strengthening Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Committees to Sustain Ebola Prevention

Dear Beloved Donor,

As Uganda continues to respond to the Ebola outbreak, with 20 confirmed cases reported, community Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) committees are playing an increasingly important role in protecting families from infection. Thanks to your generous support, these committees are expanding their activities across high-risk districts and border communities, ensuring that good hygiene practices remain a daily priority.

Committee members are working alongside Village Health Teams, local councils, school administrators, and market leaders to monitor public handwashing facilities, encourage proper sanitation practices, and educate households about maintaining clean living environments. Regular inspections of water points, schools, markets, and transport stages help identify areas requiring additional hygiene promotion or maintenance.

Community volunteers continue demonstrating proper handwashing techniques while encouraging families to keep water storage containers clean and maintain hygienic household compounds. These practical activities reinforce the understanding that Ebola prevention depends on consistent everyday behaviors rather than emergency measures alone.

The strengthened WASH committees are also helping communities take ownership of public hygiene infrastructure. Local residents are volunteering to refill handwashing stations, repair damaged facilities, and mobilize neighbors during community sanitation campaigns. This growing sense of responsibility is ensuring that hygiene improvements remain sustainable beyond the current outbreak.

Your continued support is strengthening community resilience by empowering local WASH committees to lead prevention efforts. Together, we are helping communities establish lasting hygiene practices that reduce the risk of Ebola transmission while creating healthier environments for children, families, and future generations.
