Strengthening Community Emergency Response Committees to Protect Border Communities

As Uganda continues responding to the Ebola outbreak, with 20 confirmed cases reported, community emergency response committees are becoming increasingly important in coordinating local prevention efforts. Thanks to your generous support, these committees are being strengthened across high-risk districts and border communities to ensure rapid action whenever health concerns arise.
Comprising local council leaders, Village Health Teams, teachers, religious leaders, women's representatives, youth leaders, and community volunteers, the committees meet regularly to review local preparedness, identify emerging risks, and coordinate awareness activities. They serve as an essential link between communities and district health authorities, ensuring that information flows quickly and that response measures are organized efficiently.
Committee members continue mobilizing residents for community education sessions, monitoring the functionality of handwashing facilities in public places, supporting household awareness campaigns, and encouraging prompt reporting of suspected Ebola symptoms. They also help coordinate assistance for vulnerable households affected by quarantine or movement restrictions while addressing rumors that could discourage cooperation with health authorities.
The establishment of these committees has strengthened local ownership of the Ebola response. Communities increasingly recognize that disease prevention is everyone's responsibility, and local leaders are demonstrating remarkable commitment by coordinating practical interventions that protect their neighbors.
