Support Community-Led Ebola Containment in Uganda

As Uganda continues responding to the Ebola outbreak, with 20 confirmed cases reported, sustained community engagement remains essential to preventing further transmission. Thanks to your generous support, local partnerships are continuing to strengthen infection prevention efforts across high-risk districts and border communities neighboring the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Community health volunteers are working hand in hand with local councils, religious leaders, teachers, boda boda associations, market committees, and youth groups to reinforce practical Ebola prevention measures. Through village meetings, door-to-door awareness visits, and public education sessions, families are receiving accurate information about early symptom recognition, regular handwashing, avoiding direct contact with suspected cases, and the importance of reporting illnesses promptly.

The collaboration between community structures and district health teams is improving the speed at which health information reaches households. Local leaders are helping organize community clean-up campaigns, ensuring handwashing stations remain operational, and encouraging residents to remain vigilant without creating fear or stigma.

Communities are increasingly demonstrating ownership of prevention activities. Families are voluntarily maintaining hygiene facilities, supporting neighbors affected by quarantine, and encouraging one another to follow public health guidance. This collective responsibility is strengthening resilience while reducing opportunities for Ebola to spread.
