Handwashing Facilities in communities

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

With Uganda reporting 20 Ebola cases, prevention efforts remain a top priority. Thanks to donor support, additional handwashing facilities are being established in schools, markets, boda boda stages, border crossing points, and other public gathering spaces where large numbers of people interact daily.

Hand hygiene remains one of the most effective methods for reducing the spread of infectious diseases. Community volunteers continue working alongside local authorities to ensure facilities remain functional, accessible, and well maintained. Public demonstrations are also reinforcing proper handwashing techniques and encouraging consistent use throughout the day.

School administrators have reported increased participation in hygiene promotion activities, while market vendors are actively encouraging customers to wash their hands before entering trading areas. Transport operators are also playing a critical role by directing passengers to handwashing stations before boarding vehicles or motorcycles.

The expansion of these facilities is helping normalize healthy behaviors and strengthen community confidence in outbreak prevention measures. Even as case numbers increase, communities are demonstrating remarkable commitment to protecting themselves and their neighbors.

Your support is helping create safer public spaces throughout affected regions. Every handwashing station installed represents an additional layer of protection against Ebola transmission and contributes to a stronger, healthier, and more resilient community response.
