Safe boarding for children's Education and growth

This report details key highlights, activities, milestones and next steps on boarding facilities construction support projectat Future Stars Preparatory Nursery and Primary School. The project aimed to provide a safe, conducive, and nurturing learning environment for vulnerable children from Entebbe and Kampala. With a growing number of learners unable to access education due to long distances, lack of safe accommodation, and economic hardships, this project aims to build classrooms and dormitories that meet the minimum standards set by Uganda’s Ministry of Education & Sports. By providing proper boarding facilities, the school will ensure that children, particularly girls, can attend school regularly without facing risks such as sexual abuse, early pregnancies, and dropout due to travel challenges or domestic responsibilities.

Currently, many children walk long distances daily, exposing them to dangers such as kidnapping, sexual assault, and weather-related disruptions that hinder their attendance and learning outcomes. This situation often results in late arrival to school, missed lessons, and poor academic performance. Additionally, children from economically disadvantaged families are frequently engaged in domestic work or small-scale vending to support household needs, further reducing their learning time and limiting opportunities for cognitive development. Building a safe dormitory will provide these children with a secure space to live, study, and grow, ensuring they can focus on education while remaining protected.

To date, the project has made significant strides through local fundraising and the generous contributions of GlobalGiving donors. Out of a projected budget of $84,723, $100.50 was raised through GlobalGiving, which was used to purchase iron sheets for roofing part of the dormitory. These efforts, combined with community engagement, have enabled the school administration to complete the construction of two rooms through local fundraising efforts. Additionally, the project has actively supported families through psychosocial mentorship, training in parenting and income-generating activities, and awareness campaigns on child rights and safety. These complementary initiatives ensure that the impact of the dormitory extends beyond the classroom, improving the overall wellbeing of the children and their families.

Looking ahead, additional resources are urgently needed to complete the dormitory and equip it for full functionality. Funds will be used to secure strong burglar-proof doors, purchase beds, mattresses, bedding, mosquito nets, and other essential boarding supplies. The school also plans to establish a functional sick bay, hire a qualified matron, and employ a watchman to ensure children’s safety and guidance while at school. With the full completion of this project, vulnerable children will gain access to a safe, stable, and supportive environment that empowers them to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, helping break the cycle of poverty and creating lasting opportunities for education and personal development.

Empowering Education and Safe Boarding Facilities at Entebbe Bright Christian School

I am delighted to provide you with an updated report on the progress and impact of our ongoing project at Entebbe Bright Christian School. Your continued support and the transformative donation of $100 have been instrumental in advancing our mission of providing quality education and ensuring the safety and well-being of our students.

1. Project Overview:
   Our project focuses on expanding our school infrastructure to accommodate 300 girls and 100 boys as boarding students. This strategic move aims to address the risks and challenges faced by students who have to travel long distances to reach school. By providing safe boarding facilities, we can create an environment where students can concentrate on their studies without the dangers of bad weather, harassment, or delays.
2. Achievements So Far:
   Thanks to your generous support, we have made significant progress in our project:

a. Preparations for Construction:

• We have cleared the construction site and completed the groundwork, as shown in the attached photographs. The local community has been actively involved, contributing their time and effort to ensure the success of this project.

b. Material Procurement:

• We have procured high-quality materials, including stones and sand, necessary for the construction of the boarding facilities. These materials will ensure the durability and safety of the structures.

   The need for safe boarding facilities is critical due to the following reasons:

a. Ensuring Safety and Security:

• Students currently face numerous risks, including inclement weather and the threat of harassment or assault during their long commutes. By providing boarding facilities, we will create a safe and secure environment where students can focus on their studies and thrive without these dangers.

b. Preventing Disruptions and Improving Performance:

• The availability of boarding facilities will eliminate disruptions caused by long commutes, such as fatigue, tardiness, and difficulty concentrating in class. This will enable students to fully engage in their studies and improve their academic performance.

c. Encouraging Community Engagement:

• The boarding facilities will foster a sense of community among the students, creating a supportive and nurturing environment. Parents and guardians will have peace of mind knowing their children are safe and well-cared for, potentially increasing parent involvement and engagement.

   Looking ahead, our goals and plans for the project include:

a. Construction Timeline:

• We anticipate completing the construction of the boarding facilities in three phases over the next two years. The attached timeline provides an overview of the key milestones and completion dates for each phase.

• As we expand the boarding facilities, we will recruit and train additional staff members, including caretakers, security personnel, and support staff. This will ensure the safety and well-being of the students within the boarding section.

MICRO PROJECT

Ensuring Safe and Clean Drinking Water: Urgent Need for a Water tanks

Introduction:
The health and well-being of our students at Entebbe Bright Christian School are of paramount importance to us. However, we face a critical challenge in providing them with safe and clean drinking water. The current water source, an open spring, poses significant health risks, leading to frequent illnesses and interruptions in education. To address this urgent issue, we strongly advocate for the acquisition and installation of a water tanks. This solution will ensure a reliable supply of safe and clean drinking water, creating a healthier and more conducive learning environment for our students.

Acquiring of the water tanks will help in:

1. Ensuring Health and Well-being:
   The open spring, currently used as a water source, exposes our students to waterborne diseases with severe health consequences. Contamination from pollutants, animal waste, and runoff from nearby areas puts them at risk of diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid. By installing a water tanks, we can provide a safe and clean water supply, reducing the occurrence of waterborne illnesses and safeguarding the health and well-being of our students.
2. Preventing Absenteeism and Improving Learning Outcomes:
   Unreliable access to safe drinking water leads to frequent illnesses among our students, resulting in absenteeism and disruptions to their education. With a water tanks in place, we can ensure a consistent supply of clean water, minimizing the risk of water-related diseases and reducing absenteeism. By promoting good health, the water tanks will enhance our students' attendance and concentration, leading to improved learning outcomes and academic performance.
3. Promoting Hygiene and Sanitation Practices:
   Access to clean water is essential for practicing good hygiene and sanitation. By installing a water tanks, we can establish proper hand washing facilities, promote hygiene education, and instill essential habits in our students. This will help prevent the spread of diseases and create a safe and hygienic school environment, fostering healthier habits and reducing the risk of illness among students and staff.
4. Mitigating Environmental and Climate Challenges:
   The installation of a water tanks will also address the challenges posed by seasonal variations in water availability. During dry seasons or periods of water scarcity, the water tanks will serve as a reliable storage solution, enabling us to collect and store rainwater. This will ensure a consistent supply of water for drinking, cooking, and other essential needs, mitigating the impact of environmental and climate-related challenges on our students' access to clean water.
5. Long-Term Cost Savings and Sustainability:
   While there may be initial costs associated with acquiring and installing a water tanks, it offers long-term cost savings and sustainability. The water tanks will allow us to collect and store rainwater, a free and renewable resource, reducing our reliance on expensive bottled water or purchasing water from external sources. This will result in significant cost savings over time, ensuring the sustainability of clean water access for our students.

   The installation of a water tanks will not only benefit our students but also have a positive impact on the surrounding community.
