MPWDA intends to implement a project titled "Support 5 female deaf youth for hairdressing and start a salon". In Mpigi district we have a number of female youths with deaf disability who are unemployed because of their low levels of education and limited access to both formal and informal jobs. MPWDA would like to start a saloon for deaf girls to get employed, earn a living and lead dignified lives
There are a number of efforts by government to give people grants in formed groups but those with deaf disability have not formed and therefore cannot access opportunities. Besides that these youth have not been able to attain and complete education due to the fact that in our district there is no government school with a teacher with sign language skills and many parents cannot afford private schools. So these girls drop out of school and stay at home without any plan for their future.
The project will support five deaf girls to learn hair dressing and start a joint salon. They will be trained in different styles of hair dressing such as braiding, styling, straight, wavy, curl and dreads. A space will be hired for one year for them to star. We shall also buy for them saloon equipment's such as chairs, wall mounted hair dryers, make up box, aprons, rent space for one year for the saloon and facilitate the project coordinator
These saloon girls shall earn a living, cater their day-to-day life needs and save for the future. It will also increase visibility of the ability in disability which some people have not yet appreciated. These happy saloon girls shall have something in their pockets. These deaf shall lead dignified lives for the rest of their lives.
