Nairobi's informal schools face formidable challenges with lack of teaching staff and learning materials. In our work in local schools over the last 6 years it has become clear to us that they need support to improve the quality of education, access to reading materials and help the community gain skills and experience. Our team of 5 volunteers together with yourself will help support targeted mentoring in the 12 informal schools in Ruaraka schools and donate reading materials.
The root of the problem is large number of students in these schools with few teaching staff, which leads to poor quality education. This has partly been an unintended consequence of Kenya's success in increasing primary school enrollment. Again, these schools are ill equipped with learning materials.
Our team of 5 volunteers with your support will provide additional support to over-stretched teaching staff. This will include providing teaching assistance, distributing reading materials, individually supporting the most in need children through mentorship, and organizing extra-curricular activities such as sports clubs.
The project will be a success if more local children finish school with a high level of literacy and core skills to succeed in life. There is potential for up to 5,000 children in 12 partner schools to benefit, although support will be targeted to those most in need. We will use school performance in national exams to track the impact of our work and longitudinally monitor the progress of individual children we provide intensive support to. Our volunteers will also gain skills and experience
