Title: Stop Violence Against Women in Balochistan, Pakistan

Implementing Organization: Balochistan Rural Development Program (BRDP)

Project Duration: 24 Months

Location: Province of Balochistan, Pakistan

Goal Amount: USD 27,327

Funds Raised So Far: USD 673

Status: Active on GlobalGiving

1. Project Summary

The “Stop Violence Against Women in Balochistan, Pakistan” project is an initiative of the Balochistan Rural Development Program (BRDP) aimed at addressing the widespread issue of gender-based violence in the province. Over a 24-month implementation period, the project will focus on raising awareness, providing support services, building local capacity, and advocating for policy reforms to create a safer, more equitable environment for women and girls.

Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province by area, remains one of the most underdeveloped regions in terms of social protection, gender equality, and justice. Women face numerous forms of violence including domestic abuse, sexual assault, honor killings, child and forced marriages, and harassment often with little access to protection or legal recourse. This project aims to break the cycle of silence, empower survivors, and ensure justice and dignity for women in the region.

2. The Challenge

Violence against women in Balochistan is both pervasive and deeply rooted in cultural, social, and economic factors. The challenges include:

  • High prevalence of domestic and gender-based violence, including physical, emotional, and economic abuse.
  • Honor killings and child marriages, which continue to claim innocent lives under the pretext of tradition.
  • Limited access to justice and protection mechanisms, with few safe spaces or shelters available for survivors.
  • Low awareness of women’s rights under national and international laws.
  • Lack of trained personnel and resources to respond effectively to cases of violence.
  • Cultural stigma that prevents women from reporting abuse or seeking support.

In rural Balochistan, women are among the most marginalized and silenced groups, often dependent on patriarchal systems that deny them basic freedoms and safety. Without coordinated intervention, this cycle of abuse will continue to deprive women of their rights, education, and human dignity.

3. The Solution

To tackle these challenges, the “Stop Violence Against Women in Balochistan” project adopts a holistic, multi-pronged approach combining prevention, protection, empowerment, and advocacy:

  1. Raising Awareness and Changing Attitudes:

o   Community awareness campaigns to challenge social norms that perpetuate violence.

o   Media engagement, street theatre, and seminars on women’s rights and gender equality.

  1. Providing Support Services:

o   Establishing a helpline and referral system for survivors of violence.

o   Linking survivors to psychosocial counseling, legal aid, and medical care.

o   Coordination with existing government and civil society support structures.

  1. Strengthening Local Capacity:

o   Training police, teachers, social workers, and community leaders on gender sensitivity and survivor-centered responses.

o   Building the capacity of local women-led organizations to advocate for women’s protection.

  1. Advocacy and Policy Reform:

o   Engaging policymakers and religious scholars to promote protective laws and their implementation.

o   Advocating for provincial-level policies and budget allocations to combat gender-based violence.

Through these combined interventions, the project aims to reduce incidents of violence, improve access to justice, and build a culture of respect, equality, and safety for women across Balochistan.

4. Long-Term Impact

The long-term vision of the project extends far beyond its two-year implementation period. The anticipated outcomes include:

  • Reduction in violence against women and girls through community-level change and stronger legal protection.
  • Empowerment of women, enabling them to make independent decisions about their lives, education, and health.
  • Gender equality promotion through inclusion, awareness, and equal participation in community life.
  • Strengthened institutions, including police, judiciary, and social welfare departments to better handle cases of violence.
  • Cultural and social transformation, where respect for women’s rights becomes an accepted social norm.

The project envisions a Balochistan where every woman can live free from fear and discrimination where safety, justice, and equality are realities, not privileges.

5. Current Status and Progress

The project is live on the GlobalGiving platform with a fundraising goal of USD 27,327. So far, USD 673 has been raised and is securely held in BRDP’s organizational bank account. Once the fundraising target is reached, implementation will begin immediately in selected districts of Balochistan.

Preliminary groundwork has already started:

  • Identification of target communities and potential local partners.
  • Development of awareness materials on women’s rights and protection.
  • Coordination with legal experts and psychosocial support professionals.

These preparatory actions will ensure a smooth and effective start once full funding is available.

6. Future Plan

Upon achieving the funding goal, BRDP will:

  • Launch provincial awareness campaigns on violence prevention and women’s rights.
  • Establish community protection committees and women’s support networks.
  • Conduct training workshops for police, health staff, teachers, and civil society actors.
  • Initiate a policy advocacy forum to influence decision-makers for stronger legal protections.
  • Document and share survivor stories (with consent) to raise awareness and inspire change.

BRDP also plans to work closely with government institutions, local media, and community elders to ensure sustainable impact and ownership of the project’s outcomes.

7. Conclusion

The “Stop Violence Against Women in Balochistan, Pakistan” project is a crucial step toward justice, equality, and empowerment. Through education, advocacy, and collective action, BRDP aims to give voice to the silenced, protect the vulnerable, and build a society where women live free from fear and violence.

Every donation no matter how small brings us closer to that goal. Together, we can stop violence, protect women, and build a safer future for all.
