Chelsea Flower Show

Thank you so much for your continued support for St Mungo's!

We are pleased to share an update about St Mungo's Putting Down Roots Garden, our latest achievements and how St Mungo's responded to the recent heatwave in England.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show

St Mungo’s clients and staff recently took part in this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower show, where we were delighted to take home a silver medal in the show garden category for our colourful urban pocket park, designed by Cityscapes.

Over 140,000 people visited the event and St Mungo’s welcomed a host of stars, including Dame Joanna Lumley, Phillip Schofield and Ainsley Harriott, into our colourful and accessible garden. The garden also caught the eye of the media, picking up lots of prime time coverage over the course of the week.

The pocket park now has a new home at two sites in South London, Southwark Crown Court and Guy’s Hospital, and will continue to be maintained by St Mungo’s Putting Down Roots students.

"Before gardening my mental health was all over the place, it is now stable. The fresh air really helps me, being outside and surrounded by nature significantly lifts my mood. "The gardening gives me a focus every morning, to get up and get out of my flat. I am so grateful to be a part of it."

Quarterly Achievement

In the past quarter across all of our client facing services:

St Mungo's provided accomodation and support to 3,056 people on average each night.
Our Outreach teams worked with 2,691 individuals who were rough sleeping to support them to leave the streets behind.
We worked with 13,574 people in total and ran 152 services across London, the South East and the South West.

Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP)

In July England experienced unpresedented temperatures, reaching record highs of 40 degrees. This promopted the activation of extreme weather provision for people experiencing street homelessness in London. During this time outreach shifts were increased, people were offered water and sun protection, as well as being supported to find places where they could shelter from the extreme heat.

“The temperatures we have seen this week, and which look set to continue, can kill people who are street homeless and it absolutely right that it is treated as an emergency."

Spring update from St Mungo's

As we settle into the spring months, we are all looking forward to longer and warmer days. However, for people experiencing homelessness, spending time outdoors is not a choice. Your support means we can continue to help some of the most vulnerable people in our community away from the dangers of the streets and into a place of safety where they can finally recover from homelessness and begin to rebuild their lives.

We are pleased to share an update with you featuring our achievements throughout the last quarter and exciting upcoming projects. None of this would be possible without your kind and generous support.

Quarterly achievements

In the past quarter, across all our client facing services, St Mungo’s:

Provided accommodation and support to 2,977 people on average each night.
Worked with 3,883 individuals across our outreach services.
Supported 233 individuals in Emergency Hotels, as part of our ongoing response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Worked with 13,606 individuals in total and ran 156 services across London, the South East and the South West.

Spring support

We often think of winter as being the most difficult time of year for people sleeping rough. However, spring can be equally challenging due to rapidly changing weather patterns. This March, after a week of warm weather which had us all under the impression that the cold nights were behind us, temperatures unexpectedly plummeted below 0 degrees overnight. Sleeping on the streets is dangerous at any time; however, in freezing temperatures it can be life threatening.

During this period, Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) was once again triggered which saw St Mungo’s work with local councils and other organisations to ensure that everyone had the offer of a warm safe place to sleep. Thank you for helping us to deliver this life-saving support at such a critical time.

Looking forwards

As the later spring months arrive, many St Mungo’s clients enjoy getting involved with our horticultural therapy and training project, Putting Down Roots. The wellbeing project uses gardening as a tool to help people in their recovery from homelessness, by helping to boost people’s self-esteem, confidence and sociability.

This year, Putting Down Roots has partnered with Cityscapes and Project Giving Back, to give our clients the once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase their work at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Clients have been involved in the entire process and will take part in the planting of the show garden itself. After the show, the plants will subsequently be redistributed to community gardens and St Mungo’s accommodation services. Thank you for making this possible.

St Mungo's Winter Update

Thank you for your continued support of St Mungo's. With your help, we are furthering our ambition to end rough sleeping in England by 2026. We are pleased to share an update about St Mungo's latest achievements, how we will be supporting people experiencing homelessness this winter and share a festive message with you.

Quarterly Achievements

In the past quarter, across all our client facing services:

St Mungo’s provided support and accommodation to 3,080 people on average each night;
Our 18 Outreach teams worked with 3,906 individuals who were rough sleeping, supporting them in the first step towards recovery from homelessness;
We supported 753 individuals in Emergency Hotels this quarter, as part of our response to the Covid-19 pandemic. We have supported 4,514 individuals in total in emergency hotels, between 23 March 2020 – 30 September 2021;
We worked with 13,570 individuals in total and ran 158 services across London, the South East and the South West.

Winter Support

The festive season can be a really difficult time for people sleeping rough. As it gets colder, it will become life threatening. During intense periods of cold weather, we enact our Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) to provide vital supplies and shelter to save lives of people who are rough sleeping.

The format of SWEP will remain the same as last year, with no communal sleeping permitted to reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmission. Our teams have been working extremely hard along with local authority partners to source self-contained rooms to be used for SWEP, including void rooms and non-residential spaces in suitable 24 hour supported accommodation.

StreetLink urgently connects people experiencing homelessness with the local support and services available to them. If you see someone sleeping rough this winter, please use the StreetLink app or website to tell services where you have seen someone sleeping rough so they can get the help they need.

Our work together has helped some of the most vulnerable people in our society escape homelessness and rebuild their lives. This short film shows how your support has helped us to transform the lives of Lina and James.
