We are busy preparing for our trip to Honduras. It’s hard to believe that we leave in just one month! Since it’s been three years since JCU has done the immersion, there’s a lot of excitement and nervousness about what we’ll see. Getting back to the Moroceli Valley is going to be amazing, as will seeing our friends down there. At the same time, we know that COVID had reared its ugly head in some of the rural communities, affecting both the health and economics of many communities.
About a week ago, I was able to talk to Mae, our trip coordinator at Sociedad. She’s our primary contact who works out the logistics for our trip. As we discussed possible locations for our medical brigades, I asked her about Quebrada Grande, a village about 9 miles west of Valle Arriba (as the crow flies). We’ve done some brigades there in the past, but our last visit there was in 2017. “Oh, Quebrada Grande? It needs help!” she said. “They have no jobs there and the people are hurting.”
That line, “They have no jobs and the people are hurting” is a fresh reminder as to why we are going to Honduras, why we’re raising funds for medications and water filters, and why we’re so intent on working with local leaders to improve public health. Because of your generosity, we are able to bring a ton (literally) of medications with us. Rest assured, those meds are going to a good purpose!
One final note: this is the last update until we get back from Honduras. I know we’ll have a ton to write about over the next few months are we share stories and some data from the trip!
