Hurricanes and COVID

Tango at the Water Filter Distribution in Olancho
Tango at the Water Filter Distribution in Olancho

2021 has so far been bittersweet. COVID rages on, but we now have a vaccine which is being produced and distributed across many countries. Just last week, Honduran President Hernandez announced that the first COVID vaccines would reach Honduras later this month. Still, the 800,000 vaccines en route will inoculate less than 10 percent of the country’s population.

In addition, Honduras continues to dig out from Hurricanes Eta and Iota, which had a direct impact on 3 million Hondurans and caused over $5 billion in damage. The hurricanes decimated communities beyond destroying homes and livelihoods. Our friends at Nuevo Paraiso tell us that water systems are damaged and people are in dire need of medication.

This is where we are focusing our efforts – providing medications and water filters to people. At this point, we’ve assisted in planning food, medicine, and filter distributions (funding has so far come from other sources) in two departments neighboring El Paraiso. Below is a picture of a filter distribution in the Olancho Department, which lies to the north of El Paraiso.

We know that it may take time for both the US and Honduras to vaccinate enough people to allow us to take students to Valle Arriba and its surrounding communities. In the meantime, we are working hard to provide assistance to those who need help during these challenging times. As always, we are so grateful for your partnership!
