This month, our team was deeply moved by a visit to Mulunguni village, where we met with Eunice Umazi Chikophe—a determined student whose quiet strength has left a lasting impression.
Eunice recently came to our office, her voice soft but steady as she shared her story. As one of seven children, she has carried a weight far beyond her years. Their main home, a traditional Duruma hut, doubles as a kitchen, bedroom, and storage area, while her brothers sleep in a small palm-thatched structure full of holes that let in wind and rain. Their mother, gravely ill, no longer lives with them. Their father passed away, leaving behind many children. One of Eunice’s sisters was forced into early marriage, and another left home. That has left Eunice as the sole caregiver for her younger siblings.
Her story, told through tears, spoke of missed school terms due to lack of fees, days without food, and wearing torn clothes with no other options. Yet, her biggest worry wasn’t herself—it was for her siblings, who she’s doing her best to raise.
Kenya Keys organized a home visit to understand the situation better. What we found was deeply concerning: poverty at every turn, children out of school, and no reliable caregiver in sight. And in the middle of it all stood Eunice, showing a kind of leadership and love that is rare at any age.
We responded with immediate support through the Vital Student Support Program, helping Eunice prepare for school with dignity. At the same time, we partnered with Hope Springs mentors to provide her younger siblings with a Hope Springs Support Kit. These combined efforts brought comfort, relief, and a sense of possibility to the family.
Eunice’s courage to speak up changed not only her path, but the path of her siblings too. Her story is a reminder of the unseen burdens so many students carry and the incredible strength they show in the face of it all.
Thanks to your continued support, Eunice is back in school, and her siblings are no longer left behind. This is what your generosity makes possible: not just access to education, but renewed hope, restored dignity, and the quiet beginning of lasting change.
