The Shining Light Beach School sits on a small fishing island, a place reached only by boat, where most families make their living from the water, and where a child's path to education is rarely simple. There's no easy commute to a bigger school on the mainland. No backup option nearby if a family can't afford fees. For many of our students, this school is the only door to something more than a life on the water.
That's what makes this year's graduating class so remarkable. This year, 38 students crossed a finish line that many children on this island never reach and thanks to the support of donors like you, they're already lining up at the next starting block.
Each one of these students began their journey with a community behind them, on an island where opportunity has to be built, not assumed. Today, we want to introduce you to where they're headed next and ask you to help carry them there.
Our 2026 Graduates, By the Numbers
10 students - Primary School to High School
On the mainland, this transition means a new uniform and a longer bus ride. Here, it can mean a daily boat crossing, new fees a fishing family has to find, and for some children, the very real risk of staying home to help on the water instead of continuing in a classroom. For many of our students, this is the first real test of whether their education continues at all. With your support, we help remove these barriers so a school fee or a boat fare never becomes the reason a child's story ends early.
17 students - Junior Secondary to Senior Secondary
This is one of the most vulnerable points in a young person's education anywhere, and it's felt even more deeply on an island where the nearest senior secondary option may mean leaving home, boarding away from family, or taking on costs most fishing households simply don't have spare. This is often where dropout rates spike, especially for girls as academic demands rise and the pull toward fishing, trading, or early marriage grows stronger. These 17 students didn't just pass their exams; they beat odds that too many of their island peers don't.
11 students - Graduating to Higher Institutions
These are our program's biggest success stories. The first in many of their families to leave the island for university, college, or technical training. They're walking into classrooms far from home to become nurses, teachers, engineers, entrepreneurs and many will be the first person from their community to bring that skill or profession back home. They are living proof of what's possible when a community decides a fishing island's children deserve the same chances as anyone else, proof that the light this foundation was named for is already spreading.
