Mama Respond has just celebrated its second birthday and we would like to thank all our donors who made our first two years possible by believing in our mission, sharing our values, and creating a community invested in improving health for better education.
We have been a part of the GlobalGiving team for four months now, campaigning to build a comprehensive special needs unit at Noonkopir Township Primary School in Kitengela, Kenya. Though we raised over $10,000 in the last four months on GlobalGiving and $15,000 in Australia, we are still a little way from our goal of $90,000.
The $90,000 will build a much needed fully equipped special needs unit containing two spacious classrooms, a playroom, library, resting room, therapy room, storeroom and kitchen which will be used for school meals and practical curricular activities. The unit will provide sanctuary for our 40 enrolled students – 28 of whom can not attend class anymore owing to space restrictions in place because of COVID-19. For those students, it’s been over two years since they’ve attended school.
We are very pleased to announce that our grant application to Rotary International is in the final stages of approval. This grant is championed by an Australian Club – Applecross Rotary Club – and hosted by the Embakasi Club in Kenya. We will be granted $30,000 to build ambulant toilets and wash facilities, and we’re set to break ground in the coming months.
For the purpose of good construction, it’s imperative that we lay the foundations of the unit at the same time that we do the toilet block. The $25,000 that we have raised so far will do just that.
We are thrilled to begin construction soon, but we are aware that we only have enough funds for the foundations.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you kindly for your support last year, and we look forward to putting your donation towards a safe educational space for children with special needs.
