75 years after their separation, two sisters meet again
Their mother being seriously ill, Simone and Sylviane are placed in an orphanage. The two girls are quickly separated: Simone is placed in foster care while her little sister of just 2 years stays at the orphanage for a few more years before being adopted. Life goes on, Simone founds a family and often talks about her little sister to her daughter Annie, who contacts the French Red Cross to start researching her aunt. After several months of investigation, the family recovery team of the French Red Cross announces to Annie that Simone's little sister has been found.
Every year thousands of families find themselves separated in the world. Everyday humanitarian crises, armed conflicts, natural or technological disasters, etc. thousands of families, very suddenly and often violently. The French Red Cross Family Links Recovery Service is working to restore and maintain ties between family members and shed light on the fate of missing persons.
Heat wave in France: the French Red Cross mobilized
An unprecedented heat wave hit France at the end of June, the heat wave alert was triggered for Paris and its neighboring departments. The French Red Cross, with all its volunteers and its employees is mobilized throughout the country, with vulnerable people but also all the people it receives and accompanies in its health facilities, social and medico-social.
For homeless people, the volunteer teams of the association continue and strengthen their marauding days (pedestrian or vehicle) by providing water distribution and hygiene kits. For the elderly, volunteers make home visits to isolated people identified by the town halls. They also strengthen emergency department teams in hospitals (excluding medical and nursing care).
"The summer that saves" 2019: objective of the French Red Cross: to initiate a maximum of people to the gestures that save this summer!
In 9 out of 10 emergency situations, the life of a loved one is at stake! In France, it is necessary that one person per household is trained to the actions that save. For the second consecutive year, the "Saving Summer" of the French Red Cross will take place throughout the summer period. Objective: to introduce as many people as possible to the actions that save until September 14, date of the World First Aid Day.
The volunteers of the French Red Cross are mobilizing everywhere in France to inform and initiate free of charge to young and old the first aid, the use of the defibrillator, the behaviors that save in case of exceptional situation and raise awareness about the reduction of risks. Every citizen is invited to meet the volunteers to learn about the actions that save, discover the activities of the association and perhaps even discover a soul of first aid and join the ranks of the French Red Cross as than volunteer.
Ebola: WHO declares "global health emergency"
The Ebola epidemic that has hit the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since August 2018 has claimed nearly 1,700 lives. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the "public health emergency of international concern". Faced with this exceptional measure, the French Red Cross and the International Red Cross Movement are mobilizing. Together, they carry out infection prevention and control activities in health centers in the affected area. To do this, they train health professionals and reinforce measures to protect populations. In response to the urgency of the situation, response efforts must be strengthened.

National Days of the French Red Cross
From 18 to 26 May 2019 are held the National Days of the French Red Cross : the unmissable event during which thousands of volunteers throughout France will meet you to collect a maximum of donations to continue to carry out their actions of proximity to the most vulnerable and save lives throughout the year!
The actors of the French Red Cross are in the front line and mobilize daily in the face of isolation, distress, insecurity, pain and exclusion. They need you at a time when associations are playing an increasingly important role for the poor in an increasingly difficult economic and financial context, which is having a major impact on already vulnerable populations.
Wandering devices to break the isolation and create social bonds
As part of its National Mobility program, the French Red Cross diversifies its modes of intervention to extend its action closer to needs, develops new logic of support for the public towards autonomy, and participates in the dynamic of animation of territories, especially the most fragile territories.
The itinerant devices called "Red Cross on Wheels" crisscross the roads of France by going to meet the most vulnerable, closer to their place of residence. The Red Cross on Wheels teams take care to break the isolation that these people suffer, to promote their social integration and, more broadly, to strengthen the social bond.
Real places of exchange and conviviality, the Red Cross on Wheels offers a diversity of services, answering basic needs identified in advance with the actors of the territory: food and clothing aids, access to hygiene products, access to rights, baby parents area, digital accompaniment, etc.
Asylum-seekers volunteer at the French Red Cross
When Amar, Ibrahim, Fode Salif and Amadou Oury arrived in France, they were helped and accompanied by the Red Cross and other associations. Once installed, they in turn wished to help the refugees.
Translation, orientation, administrative assistance ... their missions within the Local Unit of Lyon are varied. Thanks to their experience of the migratory journey and to the different languages they know, they bring a precious help to the team of the Home-Listen center.
Cyclone IDAI in Mozambique: French Red Cross sends emergency response team
Following the tropical cyclone IDAI, which struck Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe on the night of 14-15 March 2019, the humanitarian response is being organized. The French Red Cross immediately sent an emergency response team (ERU) specializing in water, hygiene and sanitation and shipped the next day 60 tons of humanitarian supplies by sea to Beira. The affected areas remain difficult to reach and the extent of the damage remains uncertain. In Mozambique, an interim record of 417 deaths, more than 1,500 injuries and 600,000 people affected, while an estimated 1.5 million people affected in all three countries.
French Red Cross World Conference: "Healing humanity at + 2 ° C"
While the consequences of climate change on health are already visible, the French Red Cross organized on 15 and 16 April in Cannes the first "humanitarian COP". On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), this global conference brought together more than 400 participants, experts and practitioners from the field. Together, they took stock of current knowledge, presented innovative solutions and called for the mobilization of all to meet the greatest public health challenge of the twenty-first century.

A day of meetings and exchanges around the prison-justice topic
On Friday 16th of November, the President of the French Red Cross travelled to Avignon, Vaucluse for a day devoted to the prison-justice actions carried out by the local Red Cross entity. Two highlights marked this journey: a visit to the Avignon Penitentiary Centre – Le Pontet, and a round table bringing together various actors involved in this mission. This program has made it possible to link the questions raised in this field with the projects of tomorrow. In his introduction, Christian Doubrère, national administrator, recalls that the prison-justice topic falls within the overall strategy of the Red Cross: it is therefore necessary to implement it on the territories and to support the volunteers who involved in this area. "This is indeed a historic mission of the Red Cross," claimed Professor Jean-Jacques Eledjam, President of the French Red Cross.
An emergency shelter and mother-child rehabilitation centre in Paris
Created by the Ile-de-France Regional Council and financed by the Government, the mother-child rehabilitation Centre is exclusively dedicated to single women leaving the maternity ward without a lodging solution. The region has entrusted its management to the French Red Cross with whom it is bound by a partnership agreement. Like any emergency shelter, it will close its doors on March 31st, at the end of the winter period. In the meantime, these moms in very precarious situations are safe. But not just. They find a place of respite, welcoming, calm, adapted to infants and benefit from personalized accompaniment to try to find a solution to their difficulties.
World Conference on Health and Climate change: caring for Humanity at + 2 °c
At the occasion of the centenary of the creation of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Federation, France is organizing the first "humanitarian COP" to take an update on the latest scientific research and to present innovative solutions for tackling the biggest public health challenge of the 21st century. Climate change is already having an impact on human health and the projections are alarming. Even by limiting the increase to + 2 °c, the ambition of the Paris climate Agreement (COP21), there will be consequences, sometimes dramatic, for the people. From North to South, all countries of the world are concerned and must adapt, especially to protect the most vulnerable populations.
Onsite: 400 international experts and field actors, 15 conference-debates, a project space, a virtual reality studio, film projections, photo exhibitions, and more.
When Lafayette High School meets the French Red Cross
During the last school year, Lafayette High School in the Puy-en-Velay offered its students the right to register for a "Red Cross section" integrated into the curriculum of their "Citizen Journey", and based on volunteerism. Divided into three groups, students enrolled in the Red Cross section attended during the school year one hour of "special" lessons per week taught by local Red Cross volunteers. They had the task of committing themselves to the four main components proposed as followed:
"As we embarked on an adventure by launching this first edition, we were caught up in the enthusiasm of the students; We recorded 72 entries on 450 college students! ", says the high school principal.
What solutions for homeless people?
Every year, during the winter period, the problem of sheltering people on the street or in an exclusion situation arises. Since November 1st, the Red Cross has launched the “Plan Grand Froid” (i.e. “Great Cold Plan”) Plan in about fifteen departments, resulting in measures to prevent and accompany homeless people in danger. The French State, for its part, increased the number of emergency accommodation places to more than 140 000. The winter period is a seasonal sensitive period that ranges from November 1st to March 31st. It is synonymous with the increase of epidemics and infectious diseases linked to the cold and systematically generates, on the side of the State as associations, a strengthening of measures for the prevention and protection of vulnerable populations. In the event of a very cold episode, the level of mobilization is reinforced, through the intensification of marauding or sheltering devices.

Irma - 1 year: rebuilding and anticipating to be better prepared
A year ago, on the night of 5-6 September 2017, the extremely violent Hurricane Irma ravaged the Caribbean, particularly Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy islands, causing considerable damage. After two months of exceptional mobilization to respond to the emergency, the French Red Cross has deployed its post-emergency and reconstruction activities in Saint Martin since November 2018, in particular by committing to long-term support for the most vulnerable populations affected by these disasters, but also to strengthen the capacities of its territorial actors.
Fighting Alzheimer's disease and relieving caregivers
Today, it is estimated that more than 850,000 people are affected by Alzheimer's disease in France. 1 out of every 2 patients is still unaware that he or she has the disease. Nearly 225,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. In response to this public health challenge, the French Red Cross has been developing for several years a specific support offer to promote the well-being of people with Alzheimer's disease and to take over from their families: the Alzheimer Relaxation Breakaway Centres (HRDA). This system allows carers to participate in recreational activities with their family member or, on the contrary, take the opportunity to escape for a few hours to sleep, have a coffee or meet friends.
Fostering the solidarity commitment of young people
The French Red Cross and the Ministry of National Education have signed a new multi-year partnership to promote student support. One of the major innovations of this convention is the official recognition of the Red Cross option, an experimental educational scheme that has been in place in the country since 2016. The French Red Cross regularly intervenes in schools, colleges and high schools on various subjects: raising awareness of humanitarian principles and values, combating discrimination and prejudice, improving the well-being and overall health of young people and raising awareness and training in first aid.
Flawless mobilization after the severe storms in the South of France
Severe storms struck the South of France in October, particularly in the Aude department, killing 13 people and leaving several thousand homeless. The equivalent of three months of rain fell in a few hours. From the very beginning, the teams of the Aude Red Cross and neighbouring departments (more than 300 volunteers in all) mobilised to carry out their missions of support and assistance to the populations, setting up reception and emergency accommodation centres for the many victims who had to leave their homes. The French Red Cross will provide long-term support to people who have lost everything by providing them with first aid: water, food, clothing.

The French Red Cross mobilized against Ebola in Democratic Republic of the Congo
The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has deployed a team with several Red Crescents Societies. The members of the Emergency Response Team sent by the French Red Cross are experienced Ebola crisis response professionals, especially since they were involved in the 2014 intervention to fight the Ebola outbreak in Guinea. The French Red Cross teams have been deployed in the Mbandaka region. Their mission consists of:
- Monitor and actively search for cases and contact cases
- Manage the cases, including the prevention and infection control measures
- Communicate about the risks, the mobilization and the community engagement
- Prepare and train the population to arrange dignified and safe funerals and to efficiently control infections at the community level
- Psychosocial support
- Coordinate all the involved actors
The president of the French Red-Cross inaugurated in the Haute-Loire department two services designed to support children and adults with autism spectrum disorders
The French Red-Cross develops new services to improve the involvement of people with autism spectrum disorders to the life of the city. Two support services for children and adults with autism spectrum disorders have been inaugurated in July 2018, one mobile team for children and adults, and one teaching unit for kindergarten by the president of the French Red-Cross, Jean-Jacques ELEDJAM.
A summer to save lives, the summer 2018 challenge
This summer, the French Red-Cross volunteers mobilize to freely initiate adults and children to life-saving skills. The goal is to initiate 10 000 people within the summer. Different kind of initiations are offered :
- Introduction to first-aid
- Introduction to risk reduction
- Introduction to first-aid for children
- Introduction to first aid for people with disabilities
- “Well-being and autonomy” for seniors.
The ESIRAS Project
The project aims at improving the employability and the professional and social insertion of the persons with recognized refugee status. This project is based on intensive learning of the French language, individual support and the organization of socio-cultural trips. Two teachers of French as a foreign language give lessons on a daily basis. Excursions are also organized alongside the classes in order to practice French and to tackle isolation.
The Childhood Garden, an eco-citizen project
What are the needs of a child? How can we respond collectively to it, as a professional, a parent, a citizen or, a politician?
The French Red Cross childcare center Ladybird, in Lyon city, sets up the project “Childhood Garden” to explores these questions. While infant care professions are overlooked and undervalued, the professionals mobilize to reaffirm their social and pedagogic missions, both innovative and revolutionary. The project also consists in cooperation between parents and neighborhoods. For instance, 3-year-old children grow a vegetable garden in the nursery courtyard alongside elderly groups from the next door retirement residence.
