Rural communities like ours currently face two interrelated problems. Ghana's worsening electricity supply results in daily 'light off' outages of many hours which directly impact everyone's lives and work AND as community partners, we see that beneficial TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES - such as SMALL-SCALE SOLAR ELECTRICITY that could be effectively deployed to help EVERYONE in our communities, are NOT BEING introduced. And too many households use kerosene...toxic, dangerous, expensive, poor light.
We bring 200 robust, well-designed SOLAR LANTERNS into the area every six months and 'distribute' them via a susu-like arrangement, providing part-time cash jobs for 6-10 local people and 'weaning' buyers off use of kerosene in homes. Srogboe NOW has more solar lanterns in home use than any other community in Ghana! Homes now have healthier, better light for students' study! UPCOMING..we will TRIAL a co-operative low-cost SOLAR IRRIGATION design in the area that could have enormous potential.
Solar Electricity has many potential long-term benefits for the people of this community ..at all levels..in homes, schools.small businesses, small farms. It is much cheaper than grid electricity and kerosene;.much better ecologically and healthier when replacing toxic kerosene; provides good light for small businesses during 'light off' periods and for students' home study; and a successful solar irrigation trial for small farmers will encourage cooperatives, free up capital, use less labour!
