This project works with the Elephant Pepper Development Trust to support 50 Zambian households to protect their crops from wild elephants by growing chilli hedges.
Farmers in Zambia’s Southern Province are vulnerable owing to drought and invasions from marauding wild elephants which destroy their valuable crops. This project increases the income of 50 rural households, representing 300 people.
Training and equipment will be given, assisting farmers to erect chilli fences and learn techniques to stop elephants destroying crops. Chillies are sold to Africa Spices, who guarantee a market and a fair price for their crop.
This project supports households to increase their crop yield by 70%, enabling them to better feed their family, send their children to school and re-invest in their farming businesses. This gives families security to plan for the future.
