Report VII Empowering & Protecting Slum Girls

By Debadutta Dash | Secretary, Sukarya USA

Suhana – A success Story

Suhana, 12, with her family migrated to Gurugram with her parents and sister. Her father was a construction worker and mother, a domestic help. Suhana, a drop out from 3rd grade, had already started taking care of her siblings while doing household works. Life has been full of difficulties and challenges and it never got any better for Suhana while growing up in the slums until she was signed up by Sukarya team for its ARSH program.

While being a regular participant of adolescent reproductive health program Suhana helped other fellow girls from the slum to join the program. During a session on “Life & social threats” she shared a story of her own family. Her uncle and aunt married a few years back when they were teens. After the marriage, her uncle used to abuse her aunt both physically and mentally. She always thought how to protect her aunt and there was no way for her. After seeing her aunt in such a miserable condition and things happening around her, Suhana decided not to get married in her life.

But after attending the session on life and social threats, she got to know about the right age of marriage. She learned that after completion of 18 years of age a girl is physically and mentally able to cope-up with such situations. Also, she got to know about the emergency help line numbers where help is available on such urgencies.
