Online Wildlife trader Arrested in Medan

Medan, 12 September 2018 - The Operational Team of the Sumatra Region KLHK Ministry of Environment and Forestry, arrested an online animal trafficker. The perpetrator with the initials HG (28) was arrested on Jl. Besar Namorambe, Serong Market, Delitua Village, Kec. Namorambe, Kab. Deli Serdang at 12:15 on September 12, 2018. Evidence that was secured at Mako SPORC Leopards Brigade Section I Region, namely 4 (four) slow lorises, 4 (four) Silver leaf mongkeys and 2 (two) long-tailed monkeys. This operation begins with ISCP information and other NGOs that there is someone who sells protected animals online. Based on this information the Team followed up by carrying out a hand arrest (OTT) operation. Based on the statement of the perpetrators, the animals were obtained in the Sibiru-Biru area of Deli Serdang by installing nets in fruiting trees. After being arrested, the perpetrator stores and trades these animals online. The actor acknowledged that the animal was also traded in front of his house. This action has already been done by selling animals of lorises and langurs to unknown people. Head of the Sumatra Region Ministry of Environment and Forestry Office, Edward Sembiring, confirmed that the Actor would be charged under Article 40 paragraph (2) jo Article 21 paragraph (2) letter a of Law 5 of 1990 concerning KSDAE Jo PP 7 of 1999 concerning Preservation of Plants and Animals with threat of a maximum sentence of 5 (five) years and a maximum fine of 100 million rupiah.
