Summary

The project will distribute sanitary pads to 7000 vulnerable girls from 10 rural schools in Eastern Uganda, ensuring consistent school attendance and reducing school drop outs caused by menstruation. The project will also enhance information access on menstrual hygiene, reproductive health and sanitation to school girls using the CHAST model and mini radio drama that will be implemented by the Inspire Youth school clubs in the 10 target schools.

Challenge

Imagine a girl in a classroom. She is in pain, and she is not aware that her menses have begun. She has no pads, and the boys are staring at her soiled dress. At home, the girl's mother has no money to buy her a packet of sanitary pads, and her only alternative is to use an old piece of cloth. She misses school for three to five days. And then one day, she is so behind in her studies that she drops out. This is a situation affecting the majority of girls in rural areas of Uganda.

Solution

The project will support the provision of menstrual products and dissemination of crucial information on menstrual hygiene, reproductive health and sanitation to young girls between 9 years to 16 years from 10 schools in eastern Uganda. School girls from 10 schools will be equipped with essential knowledge on menstrual hygiene and reproductive health through continuous trainings by using the CHAST (Children's Hygiene and Sanitation Training) model implemented by Inspire Youth school clubs

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide 7000 sanitary pads to vulnerable girls thereby significantly reducing absenteeism and school dropout rates caused by menstrual challenges. This will increase educational attainment among girls hence contributing to gender equality in education. The CHAST model and drama series will foster a culture of awareness and openness around menstruation and related health issues thereby breaking taboos and promoting better health practices among adolescent girls in 10 schools.
