Setting up Financial club in secondary school

By Nnenna Mosugu | Executive Director

Grow With Data Youth Foundation (GWDYF) envisions creating the right attitude towards money among youths, preparing them to make better financial decisions in the future and reduce the poverty gap in Nigeria. This vision gained traction in the just concluded first academic term (2021/22) club activities in 12 secondary schools in Adamawa state, Nigeria.

The curriculum for the term was designed to teach secondary school students the basic concepts of personal finance, as shown below;

Week One: Career Planning

Week Two: Saving & Spending

Week Three: Budgeting

Week Four: Investment & Insurance

Week Five: Entrepreneurship

In collaboration with the GlobalGiving community, Gotel Communication TV station, and school administrators in Adamawa State, we implemented a six week, game-based financial literacy project across 12 districts in Yola. We had about 523 students participating in the Financial Literacy Club activities this year. To crown club activities this term, Grow with Data Youth Foundation hosted the first-ever Financial Literacy Interschool Competition (FLIC) in Northern Nigeria, from December 10th - 18th, 2021. Students were utterly excited to participate in this event.

The purpose of the competition was to:

Provide students with an engaging and challenging experience that was both educational and competitive

Deepen some of the fundamental entrepreneurial and business skills, driving financial inclusion, and literacy among young people

Enhance social and emotional learning

Build students' confidence in handling pressure

Improve the knowledge base of the community on entrepreneurship and financial literacy.

This year, we plan to expand the number of schools involved in FLIC by 100% and the number of students participating by the same amount.

With deep appreciation in our hearts, we thank you our donors for making this term's club activities and the Interschool competition a reality.
