PAM's main purpose is to provide support to prisoners’ children languishing in jail or outside with relatives in a very precarious and vulnerable situation. They usually become child labor or victims of sexual abuse. PAM rescues such children and provides them shelter, food, education and livelihood skills. Usually it supports until children are 18 years old or complete the higher secondary school. As those children did not have proper upbringing in the jails and with the relatives they are unruly, undisciplined and having no dreams for future. PAM introduced Judo to bring them out of such situation. It is very successful in this endeavor. PAM children are usually Judo champions in Nepal. They also represent Nepal outside and bring medals. Because of this PAM children after completing life at PAM are employed by Nepal Police, Army or Armed Police to play judo on their behalf’s. But some of them do not qualify so they need to be prepared for other employments because after coming out of jails their parents being displaced cannot support them. Local communities and schools also did not have positive image of those children. So PAM started communities support program with support from the GlobalGiving. However, probably we could not let donors get convinced about the precarious situation of the children and importance of PAM supporting them; so PAM could not get enough support.
To fulfill the purpose PAM have started communities children to join judo training, 25 children from the communities are taking regular training. Some of them come from far away districts and get training. It has also started a library cum computer training centre where PAM children and communities’ children study books and do their home works, and also learn computers and use internet. It has a gym with limited equipments which children use for exercises. But there is not enough space for all this. So PAM has bought a piece of land to build a judo hall with library and gym in it. It has also got assurance for partial support for construction. It will start the construction by January 2023 and may complete in one year. PAM has employed judo cum gym trainers, library assistant, and computer trainer. GlobalGiving support has facilitated PAM to do so. Once judo hall is built all these facilities will be opened for other community members also.
Another area in which GlobalGiving support is utilized is developing agricultural activities for production, demonstration and training community members. Two agricultural people are employed. PAM is raising chickens, planting vegetables and fruit trees. PAM area has town planning so it is losing almost all agricultural land rather it has all the houses around. There is very few land area available. So PAM is developing demonstration for roof top gardening and agriculture in available land area. It is demonstrating tunnel farming for off-season farming and seedling production, liquid manure, plastic mulching, roof top gardening, drip irrigation are promoted. Nine community farmers have been trained in roof top gardening.
Recently, PAM has enlisted nine prisoners’ children from various prisons, If PAM had spaces and facilities, and it seems that 100s of prisoners’ children would like to join. This year by December being 18 years old or completing 12th grade, seven children would have to leave PAM. One each has joined Army and Armed Police, three are employed by PAM, and two others will join army or police or start own enterprise. Even leaving PAM they will be provided support for education and until they are capable for livelihood.
PAM’s new board is quite active and meeting once a month. They are taking various responsibilities to support PAM, children and communities it serves.
