Children during the test in the village Nefrelaye
Children during the test in the village Nefrelaye

Each year in July, we select students to enter the LAP.

They are selected among children of 11 villages who have succesfully finished their primary school.

This year we had 6 selection centers where we received 155 candidates. We are looking at selecting a maxixum of 70 students. Out of those 155 candidates, 96 where girls and only 59 boys. Parents see the boarding school aspect of the LAP has a protection for the girls, mainly to avoid to become pregnant.

The test is a mix of questions for French, math, general knowledge and logic.

This year we selected 64 students (38 girls and 26 boys) aged between 11 and 14 years old. We had 39 girls at first, but we were told that one was pregnant!!!!! This is unfortunatly the situation of many girls in rural areas. This confirms the motivation of parents to send girls to our school.

This new school year we will also have a new director, Pamoussa Sawadogo. He will start on August 21st.

Attached you will find a detailed report about the past school year. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions.

As you can see in the report, your financial support to the LAP is very important. Please communicate to your friends and family about the LAP.

Thank you.

July 1st was the last day at school for the 215 students of the LAP.

Results for the school year:

As last year the results of our students to the national exam called BEPC was not good. Only 29% of the students passed the exam. We have seen the discipline deteriorating through the year and we have also seen a lack of leadership at the school. We will start the next school year with new director. Also several teachers will be changed.

One of the major task for next year will also be to give a purpose to the children. Many of them coming directly from remote villages do not have an idea why they have to study.

Agricultural certificate:

At the end of the 3rd year, we make the students pass an agricultural certificate, This is an in house exam. From the 53 students 41 got the certificate. Students who have got the certificate got also a chicken to take home from the production of the school.

End of the year performance:

For the last 3 weeks of the school year, students were busy working the field of the LAP, but also preparing a performance for the last day. Parents coming to pick up their children could enjoy this performance.

Students at the LAP thank you for your support. Without it those children coming from poor farmers families wouls not have been able to attend the LAP.

School year 2017-2018 will start on September 15th 2017. We still your support for thsi new school year.

End of the second trimester:

  • Results of the students: The results of the first two years were acceptable, for the 3rd and 4th year they were below expectations. We have introduced end of february study groups program which we think will help students. For this we have realised new blackboards.

Pourcentage of students with a acceptable grade at the end of the second trimester:

1st year   2nd year   3rd year    4th year

95%           80%         74%         26%

  • Activities last day before vacation

The general supervisor had organised for the first time at the LAP some sport events on the last day of school before vacation. Those activities started a 7:30 AM (to avoid the heat): soccer game for boys, 60 meters dash, relay race and wrestling for boys and girls.

  • New examination for technical subjects (CAL):

Students are tested in 4th year for general subjects via a national exam called the BEPC, but there are so far no official test for technical subjects. We will introduce this school year an examination called the CAL (Certificat Agricole du LAP) which will validate the technical studies made by the students.

1- Addition of a copy machine at the LAP:

The LAP has electricity only via the generator from 6 to 10 PM. In order to take care of the administration we needed electricity also during the day in the office of the LAP.

We have installed solar panels and we can now work on the computers, charge our telephones and power our new copy machine.

This will help all the staff and teachers to perform their adiministration. It will also cut down some costs for copies. The challenge is now to maintain the copier.

2- Modification of the ovens at the kitchen:

We have to cook 3 meals for more than 200 people each day. So far we are using only wood for the cooking. The ovens made originally were not very efficient and the smoke was very bad in the kitchen.

With the help of a mason from Benin, we were able to modify our 3 ovens within 10 days. The main part of the material used was termites ground.

This modification will help us save at least 30% of wood usage. It has also eliminate most of the smoke in the kitchen which is vey good for the health of the cooks.

WE ARE TAKING THIS OPPORTUNITY TO WISH YOU AN HAPPY NEW YEAR 2017.

WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT, CHILDREN ARE DEPENDENT OF THIS SUPPORT TO GET AN APPROPRIATE AND GOOD EDUCATION.

STUDENTS

The first selection process in the 9 villages where we are active brought only 45 new students. This situation comes mainly from the lack of results in the year 2015-2016.

In order to find additional students we had to go to 2 new villages.

         1st year   2nd year    3rd year   4th year   Total

Girls     41          24              28            16         109

Boys    26           28             24             31        109

Total     67           52             52             47         218

It is interesting to see that over 60% of the new students are girls. Since the students are in a boarding parents feel safe to send their daughter there.

PERSONNEL

Change in the teachers and addition of a new director should bring the rigor needed to obtain results.

INFRASTRUCTURE

A new dormitory has been built and new showers and toilets in order to accomodate the large number of girls.

OBJECTIVE 2016-2017:

We are aiming to get at least 70% of the 4th year students succesful at the national exam in June 2017.

WE THANK ALL THE DONORS FOR THEIR SUPPORT AND HOPE THAT THEY CAN COMMUNICATE THIS FANTASTIC PROJECT TO THEIR FRIENDS.
