At the end of August, the school year in Cambodia ended. The children are now on school holidays until November when the new school year will start.
Over the past three months, the CCP Committees have continued to monitor the students’ attendance and progress. The CCP Committees held their second parents meeting of the year, to discuss the children’s progress with their parents and ensure the parents had purchased required study materials for the students.
In August, SeeBeyondBorders conducted student testing to see how the information the teachers learned at these workshops was put into practice and its impact on the student’s educational achievement. In Angkor Thom, 85% of students in the Quality Teaching Programme passed their Maths tests (this does not include the 13% of students who were absent on the day of the assessment). This is slightly lower than last year’s pass rate of 93% (with a 9% absence rate), however extenuating factors, such as the prevalence of dengue fever this year, has impacted some students ability to attend school. We expect that in the coming years the pass rate will rise again.
Attendance rates continued to be high, despite some children falling ill with dengue fever. When students missed school, members of the CCP Committees visited them in their homes and worked with their parents to get them to a clinic, if necessary. In total, 7 students contracted dengue fever. Overall, the CCP students’ average attendance for the school year was 95%.
