Schools have been closed in Cambodia since March 2021 due to ongoing community outbreaks of Covid-19. The economic turmoil caused by continuing restrictions and closures has plummeted many families into poverty and the families of the children on our Conditional Cash Payments programme, who were already classed as 'extremely poor', are really feeling the strain.
We have been working hard to stay in touch with our beneficiaries since schools were closed because there is a high risk that the children will not return to school when they are allowed to. This is because income generation is a priority for their families and they do not usually value education very highly.
We have coached teachers in how to keep the children engaged in learning and the teachers have been distributing worksheets and activities to children's homes. We have been tracking children's engagement levels and they are being encouraged, by their families, teachers and community members, to continue doing their school work whilst they are at home. Happily, engagement levels have remained high and this resulted in 79 families receiving their second Conditional Cash Payment at the end of June. Unfortunately one child has not been engaging and really wants to drop out and therefore did not receive the payment. We have discussed the situation with his parents several times and we will continue to try to encourage him back to learning, especially when the schools reopen and we hope he may be more motivated to join his friends.
This is an extremely challenging time for Cambodians and we really value your continued support of our projects. Thank you very much!
