We are really pleased to report that our Conditional Cash Payments (CCP) program in the Angkor Thom district of Siem Reap has been running smoothly this year. The second semester for the CCP students began at the end of April following a break for Khmer New Year.

After the students returned to school the CCP Committee disbursed the second payments to the families, with assistance and oversight from SeeBeyondBorders. One child has dropped out of school despite the best efforts of the CCP Committee to prevent this, which means that 59 families (98%) received the second payment. The 59 students that remain on the program have maintained good attendance rates, they are progressing well in class and they have met all the conditions of the program.

In total, $1,475 was disbursed to the families in this round of payments and this was made possible by the generous support of our donors. Thank you!

Delivering sustainable teacher training

We run lots of activities in this district and we thought this was a good opportunity to tell you about the sustainability of some of our teacher training here because, of course, good quality teaching helps to keep the children engaged in their lessons and ensures they are keen to go to school regularly. This goes a long way to them continuing to meet the conditions of the CCP program.

In Angkor Thom district, we have identified a number of mentors who have become Senior Mentors, which means that they have wholeheartedly adopted our approach to teacher professional development and they want to learn how to lead this themselves in future. We have gradually been training them in workshop facilitation techniques, so that they are able to deliver teacher workshops confidently to any new teachers entering their district.

Earlier this week, the Senior Mentors spent a day in our Siem Reap office being trained on how to run a workshop on patterning in Maths. They will take this knowledge and run a workshop for teachers in a few weeks time, with the support of SeeBeyondBorders staff. They will keep all the workshop guides and related resources so that they can run the workshop as many times as they need to in future. Not only does this mean that teachers are being trained by their peers, but it also enhances the Senior Mentor's knowledge and means that they are even better equipped to support the teachers in their classrooms, as they learn to embed their skills into their daily lessons.

Change begins with education.
