Scholarships to Live Dreams and Move Forward

Kato-san, The President of the Sendai YMCA International Hotel and Pastry School, shares that two students are having internship training at hotels until middle of September and the two are preparing for cake making contests. We are proud of these students and their progress in their courses including English.  Please read in their own words their latest news: 

Ikumi’s Summer Report -

I have a good news to tell you!!  I got a job offer from a bakery ‘Bellbe’ in Kanagawa Prefecture.

I tried to get a job from ‘Donk’ which I told you about this on last report, but I am relieved to get a job offer from Bellbe.  I will work there next spring.  Please come to buy when you go to Japan.

Now I am making marzipan works to submit to Japan Cake Show in Tokyo and Tohoku Block Contest.  Attached photos are for Tohoku Block Contest.  The theme of this work is ‘the universe’ which shows a lady in kimono is holding the earth gently. 

I haven’t started making works for Japan Cake Show yet.  I will introduce you by next report.  Please be looking forward to it.

Ayaka’s Summer Report –

 I have been heavily concentrated in making pastry works for the Tohoku Block Contest and the Japan Cake Show in Tokyo. The category I will submit is the cake decoration using marzipan.  My theme is ‘Wedding’.  Making works in my own image is difficult, as well as fun.  It’s worth the work.  I am feeling my progress because I am doing things that I couldn’t do better than last year.

It is a precious time and I learn a lot by doing with care such as time I spend, part arrangement, carefulness, etc.  It is greater time than last year.  As the quality of my work goes better, I will work very hard to complete it.

Chinami’s Summer Report – 

School has been summer vacation from the beginning of July.  During summer vacation, first year students have an internship training.  We studied very hard for internship training for our future job.

In order to join internship training, firstly, we have to pass a restaurant service examination in school.  We practiced very hard encouraging each other after school.

I could pass the exam, I am now having a summer internship training at Sheraton Grande Tokyo Bay Hotel in Chiba Pref. Only few days have left since July 15.

I worked there as a bell staff.  There are a lot of work and things I have to memorize for bell staff.  But as staff people of the hotel are very kind to me and give some advice, I don’t feel terrible to work.  I will try my best at the different section for the last two days.

I realize firstly through the internship training that language is important.  I found some issues such as how to talk to seniors and bosses and English conversation.  When school starts from next week, I will study Japanese and English more and more.

Fuka’s Summer Report -

I have had an internship training at a hotel called the Winzar Hotel Toya Resort & Spa since July 14^th, 2016.  As I reported in the video letter before, my goal is to work for someone.  I could have a sense of it through this internship training. 

There were a lot of guests from not only Japan but also China, USA and so on.  I was not good at English before but I could speak daily conversation because I studied very hard.  The section I worked was a Japanese restaurant.  Explaining menus in English was very difficult.  I realize that I need more study.

I would like to spend fulfilling school life by seeing what I felt and my ability again.

We are pleased to report that since graduation from the Sendai YMCA International Hotel and Pastry School in March Yushi got a job at the new Vista  Hotel (http://www.hotel-vista.jp/sendai/)  in Sendai which will open this summer.  He will be a part of the opening staff.  Ikumi has started her job at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo so we are pleased that both were able to start their careers with good jobs.  

We have two new students who have received scholarships.  Chinami is from Ishinomaki and is studying in the Omotenashi Department.  Omotenashi means Japanese hospitality.  The Sendai YMCA College has this department for Japanese students who learn Japanese hospitality for guests from abroad and for foreign students who want to work at hospitality business in Japan.   Fuka is from Watari and is studying in the Hotel Department.  Both Fuka and Chinami’s houses were severely damaged  in the coastal Miyagi towns of Ishinomaki and Watari which were heavily affected by the disaster.

Ayaka and Ikumi successfully completed their first year and are now second year students at the Hotel Department Pastry Course.  Both are focusing on preparing for employment when they graduate in March.
